We posted the FinFolio Alpha on the site yesterday. It's the desktop version only, with a few working screens, a couple reports, and one working interface. For now, it only works in client/server mode so don't try to run it over the wire. It's really rough--even for an alpha. There are too many known issues to list, so I won't try. Expect it to crash a lot and you won't be disappointed. ;-)

The alpha is a painful but necessary step, so we can see how the installation program and all our new tech works out in the real world. If you want to see what it looks like without all the hassle, contact me and I'll do an online demo for you.

Despite all the negatives, I'm fairly happy with the way the software is shaping up. Some of our forward-thinking ideas, like errors/alerts and the process manager, have exceeded my expectations. I've been chuckling to myself for the last week, wondering how Techfi ever kept our AdvisorMart data clean without a tool like this.

We'll be posting another Developer Preview later this week with example projects that hook into the GUI and create custom screens. Very cool--you reference the FinFolio DLLs in Visual Studio, and create custom screens and objects. Then you compile, and drop the DLL into the FinFolio directory and your screens show up in the application. The main sample project is a simple (but functioning) rebalancing plugin.

System requirements for the alpha:

  • Dual-core Pentium or better
  • 2GB RAM or more
  • 80 MB of disk space
  • Microsoft SQL Server

The final release shouldn't need such a big machine. And like I said, if you don't want an installation headache, give me a call and I'll do an online demo for you.

If you do want to install it (and you have download permissions) you can get the Alpha here.
