Here we are again

Let me catch everyone up a bit. After Techfi was acquired by Advent, I stayed on for another year or so, fighting for Techfi clients and staff alike. Obviously, I lost. I don't blame Advent really, in their eyes, they had two competing products. They were losing a lot of money and had to make some tough decisions, they laid off a lot of employees and cut a lot of projects. Techfi was one of the projects that got cut.

I moved on from Advent and joined a local company called IAN who had been acquired by SS&C. While at SS&C, I restructured development and redesigned their product for the next generation. After many discussions with SS&C management I realized it was probably going to go the same way as Techfi did after the Advent acquisition. I was getting worried that IAN would be shut down.

It was about this time that I ran into Matt again. We decided that to start WealthFly.com to report on technology and trends in the industry. It also was a great way to keep in touch over the last couple years while he rode out his no-compete. The blog is going surprisingly well and we have many regular readers.

A month ago, we decided that it was time to start writing some software. Early in January, Matt and I sat down to figure out what to do. We talked about checkbook software, financial planning software, financial analytics and portfolio management.

After many days of discussions we determined that, fundamentally, the portfolio management market hasn't changed. There are still only three big players dominating the market (with several fringe companies struggling to get traction). So we decided there's still room for a new player.
